Ferry Steelers v Measteg RFC (Briton Ferry)
The Ferry Steelers Youth the combination of Corus and Briton Ferry youth sides continued their pre season preparations with a second friendly against Osprey’s Premier League side Maesteg youth this Saturday at Briton Ferry RFC.
Still buoyant from being crowned District 10 a-side champions and with a 29 to 15 win under their belt against Cwmavon Youth two weeks ago and their first league postponed due to the weather last weekend, the Steelers knew they were in for a tough game in this warm up match.
They got off to a dream start when the forwards took the drop out and rumbled up the pitch with a fine display of rucking and close possession, before hooker Daniel Morgan picked up from the base of a ruck and drove his way over the try line for the first score of the match. Fired up by this early success the Steelers dominated possession and followed up with a second try from prop Nathan Bray which was duly converted by Jamie Griffiths to bring the score to 12 – 0. Nathan Bray picked up his second try when he linked with winger Kieran Weightman whom was stopped just short of the line, Bray who had continued to follow up looked unfortunate when the ball was fumbled unsighted by the referee Bray regathered to cross for his second try. Maesteg regrouped and put pressure on the Steelers defence forcing them off-side deep in their own half the resulting penalty kick bouncing off both uprights before crossing the cross bar. Steelers Number 8 Sion Dunkley soon got their fourth try on the board after cutting through the strong Maesteg defence. The Steelers reached the half-time with a fifth try from winger Stuart Dighton, duly converted by Jamie Griffiths for a 29 – 3 lead.
Maesteg whom regrouped at the half-time interval soon showed the Steelers their own class and dominated possession for the first fifteen minutes, only to be denied further points by a few errors and a spirited Steelers defence. With both defences dominating this phase of the game Maesteg broke the second half deadlock with their second penalty to bring the score to 29 – 6, their determination and continued possession soon saw them eventually break the Steelers defence creating an overlap on the blindside for a try of their own in the corner. At 29 – 11 and with some enterprising rugby from both teams neither try line was crossed again until a solo effort from Steelers centre Greg Owen saw him carve a route through the Maesteg defence and score their sixth try under the posts, the conversion by Jamie Griffiths bringing the final score to 36 – 15.
The Steelers hope to take this success into next weeks game when they entertain visitors Burry Port Youth in what will undoubtedly be a tough and competitive game for them in the first round of the Welsh Youth Cup. Playing at Corus RFC on Saturday 20th September for a 2.30pm kick-off, the youngsters would appreciate a good supporting crowd.
